Typically I try to avoid discussing breaking news on this site. Usually such stories are overflowing with inaccuracies and I strive to keep this blog above the typical media sensationalism. That said, today’s arrest of virulent gun control advocate, Leland Yee, deserves a mention mainly as a due to the ridiculousness that is coming out of this story.
As our readers may have noticed, the California State Senator was arrested on charges of corruption today. When the headline came across, my initial reaction was somewhere between joy and ambivalence. I was happy for fellow gun owners who are stuck living in California, as Yee was certainly a firm prohibitionist on matters relating to firearms. Still, this has been a tough week for Democratic corruption and on that note, I was hardly surprised. It was not until I arrived home from work tonight and read some more about the story that I began to move from ambivalence to incredulity.
According to the FBI, Yee is being arrested for (among other things) illegal firearms trafficking. Yes that’s right; the guy who pushed for bullet-buttons and semi-automatic firearm bans in California is being arrested for arranging illegal imports and transfers of small arms, including fully-automatic rifles and “shoulder-fired missiles” (Pages 83-85 in linked document). This is the sort of story that you might see on a television crime series, but is likely too ridiculous for even those producers.
Still, maybe Yee was just being a smart business man all these years. Legislation supported by him probably put a respectable dent in the competition.
